Celebrating its 75th year, Gibson Island Yacht Squadron (Gibson Island, Maryland) is looking to fill Full-Time and Part-Time Junior Sailing Instructor positions for the 1999 summer. Programs run from June 13th through August 14th and supervise 100 children ages 8 to 15 through the course of the summer - averaging 25 in attendance at one time. Boats include Optimists, Bytes, Lasers and 420's. Instruction levels range from Baymanship which introduces young children to the sea and safety on the water to Race Team which travels 2 to 3 times a week to area regattas. Program includes a seminar week on Learn-to-Sail, Kolius PAYS, and (Maryland) Boater Safety. Club hosts the 1999 Junior Chesapeake Bay Open Championship Regatta. Water-skiing excursions coordinated with local ski clubs. Located just north of Annapolis and sailing off the beach at the mouth of the Magothy River. 1.  A team leader and at least one coach will be chosen to lead the US Team to the 1999 ISAF Youth Worlds.  Classes are 420, Laser, Radial, and IMCO. Selection will be made by the US SAILING Youth Committee, chaired by James Appel, jappel@edgenet.net.  Expenses are typically covered.  

2.  Sailing is included in the World University Summer Games for the first time in 1999, and the US will enter a team.  Skip Whyte will be named Team Leader, and at least one additional coach will probably be named, depending on the size of the US Team.  Classes are Laser, Europe, 470 M&W, IMCO M&W. Selection of coach by the USOSC.  Expenses only may be covered.

Pleon Yacht Club (PYC, Marblehead, MA), the site of the 1998 OPTI NATIONALS and winner of the Mass Bay yacht club of the year award, is seeking a race oriented Head Instructor.  Pleon YC's Head Instructor responsibilities are to help hire racing coaches and oversee the instructors for a junior sailing program of 200 to 250 kids.  This position offers latitude to the
innovator who wants to make a good program into a great program for both beginners
and advanced racers.  This is a full time summer job.

Sheridan Shore Sailing School is looking for a head instructor, other instructors and a racing coach. The sailing school, affiliated with the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club uses the US Sail curriculum and is located at Wilmette Harbor, about 5 miles north of Chicago. Housing may be available.

Duxbury Bay Maritime School DBMS is a community-based school located on Duxbury Bay in Duxbury, MA.

Position: Geneva Lake Sailing School Executive Director (Full Time Position - Year Round)

Compensation Range: $25,000 - $55,000 depending on experience of candidate.

The Successful Candidate:

As the first full time Director of the school, the successful candidate will be expected to achieve two specific goals: 1) to actively promote and develop new programs for the school; 2) to grow the school's enrollment so the program and all paid positions are fully funded. He/she will be expected to have the planning, leadership and training skills to achieve these objectives.  Solid experience managing collegiate or high school sailing programs is desirable.  US Sailing  Instructor/Coach Certification is also desirable.

Job Purpose:
* Upgrade current GLSS Programs.
* Supervise instructors and make hiring and firing recommendations to the GLSS Board.
* Expand, document and maintain curriculum.
* Prepare and manage the annual budget in support of the Board's goal of breaking even on operations, excluding capital purchases.
* Promote the school to Lake Geneva Yacht Club (LGYC) members and the local community to expand participation and attract new members to the LGYC.  This would include developing and implementing a marketing plan, creating promotional materials and managing the web site.
* Encourage young sailors to go beyond local racing and successfully compete in national and international events.
* Develop a high school (young adult) racing program with local high schools (both Spring and Fall).  Run regattas against Milwaukee and Chicago schools.  The goal is to emulate Minnetonka and Chicago yacht club programs.
* Make recommendations as to equipment needs to support programs.
* Develop a program to teach adults to sail and to support the growth of the LGYC.

GLSS Current Programs

The Geneva Lake Sailing School has taught sailing to youths on Geneva Lake for more than 68 years.  Currently the program attracts 100 to 125 students per year in a combination community sailing program and racing program.  The racing program is made up principally of children of members of the LGYC.  Classes are taught in X Boats and Optimist Dinghies.  The school also owns a 16' Zodiac, 4 small Whalers and 2 Sonars for adult lessons.  The school has a 65 year lease to run a sailing school on the grounds of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club.

The Lake Geneva Yacht Club is a founding member of the Inland Lake Yachting Association (ILYA).  It owns 400 feet of shorefront on Geneva Lake and has excellent boat storage and cranes for boat launching.  The Club has a long history of running excellent one design, competitive sailboat racing on Geneva Lake in Inland Lake Scows and keelboats and has a number sailors who have competed at both national and international levels.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Report to Junior Fleet Chairman , Fleet Captain And General Manager

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Year-Round Coaches and Summer Staff

TIME REQUIREMENTS: 40 Hours/week plus weekends as required

STATEMENTS OF DUTIES: Junior Program Director oversees operation of all aspects of the Junior Sailing Program including: development and maintenance of facilities, selecting and management of seasonal and year-round staff, accounting, budgeting, calendar scheduling and coordination, promotion and participation in-club events (sailing and fund-raising), promotion and coordination of all out-of-club events, preparation of material for club magazine, coach at events as required. This position also requires the knowledge and use of word processing equipment, data bases and spread sheets, copiers, etc. All duties associated with general office functions. This job also involves a high degree of contact with both adult and junior membership in a service, management, consulting, and disciplinarian format.

MAJOR DUTIES: · Selection, Orientation, and Supervision of staff. · Billing and collection of fees for programs and boat use. · Preparation, scheduling, distribution, and facilitation of annual calendar · Develop safe, relevant, and equitable policies and guidelines for the behavior and participation of member and non-member juniors, parent and seasonal staff. · Publication, promotion, and facilitation of participation in out-of-area Junior sailing events · Attend monthly meetings of the Junior Fleet Committee and report on recent and upcoming events. · Plan program material (capital) requirements for future · Organize, maintain, and improve program capital and operating equipment, grounds, storage facilities, in a safe manner. · Provide written material and photos for club newsletter. · Prepare budget for regular program operation · Develop safe, timely, and relevant material to be used as curriculum for sailing program.

EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: First Aid, CPR, US Sailing Level One and Level Two Dinghy Instructor Certification. Lifeguard from the American Red Cross is optional but recommended.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum two years teaching sailing at a club with a recognized Junior Sailing Program preferred. Minimum two years experience directing similar programs or working in industry related field.

OTHER: Should have minimum basic knowledge of fiberglass hull and sail repair, power tool operation, outboard motor operation and trouble shooting. Should be familiar with chemicals, resins, and solvents relevant to the care and maintenance of boats and their safe application and storage. Should have a thorough knowledge of, and experience in dinghy sailing and racing. Should be able to operate a personal computer and have knowledge of various software programs.

The Newport Harbor Yacht Club and Newport Harbor High School are searching for a full time Junior Sailing Director and High School sailing coach. The junior sailing program consists of 150 sailors age 8-18. The program runs year round with weekend sailing September through June and an eleven week summer seesion June through August. The High School Sailing Team holds weekly practice October through May and travels to all PCISA and national regattas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hire and manage a staff of 12-14 summer instructors and 3-5 off season coaches. Plan, develop and implement instructional programs for all ability levels year round. Coach on the water at selected regattas and clinics. Prepare monthly mailings that promote junior activities to the Membership. Prepare junior sailors for local, regional and national eventsn by planning practices, clinics and organizing trips. Write an edit “Non-Calm” section of monthly Club magazine. Actively participate on all SOuthern California youth sailing organizations. Organize and coach Newport Harbor High School Sailing Team practices and regattas (January-May)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants should possess the following: 4 year B.S. or B.A. degree. US Sailing Level 1 and Level 2 Certification. At least 2 years experience coaching and one year administrating a youth sailing program. Competitive junior and college sailing background.

Portland Yacht Club located on beautiful Casco Bay Maine is looking for a PROGRAM DIRECTOR, DIRECTOR OF RACING, an OPTI RACE COACH, and other levels of 420 and Opti instructors for the 1999 season and beyond. Our program runs for 9 weeks and is broken into 3 sessions that run 5 days a week, 9am to 4pm. 55 to 60 kids attend each session in Opti Beg, Opti Adv Beg, Opti Int, 420 Beg, 420 Int, 420 Adv Int, plus very active Opti and 420 race teams.

The Program Director manages all day to day aspects of the sailing program. He/she should currently be an experienced director or asst director. Strong organizational skills are paramount. The position requires lots of interaction with parents and committee members in planning and organizing a successful program. The Director should be a strong manager with the ability to lead a group of 9 instructors ranging in age from 17-20. He/she should also have curriculum setting skills and be goal orientated. Safety is of utmost importance in our program. The right Director will be allowed a great deal of autonomy in program structure and development. Salary is negotiable for the right individual and housing with members is available.

The DIRECTOR OF RACING manages all aspects of the race program with the 420 Race Coach and Opti Race Coach reporting directly to him/her. Strong organizational skills are paramount. The position requires lots of interaction with parents in planning, organizing and attending travel events thru-out the Northeast (and beyond if so motivated). The Director will need to coordinate transportation, registration and housing. He/She should also be experienced in high level coaching and will be active in the daily coaching of both teams as well. The right Director will be allowed a great deal of flexibility in what events to attend and the structure of the overall race program. Salary is negotiable for the right individual and housing with members is available.
OPTIMIST RACE COACH - The Opti race team has grown over the last few year and is now ready to the next step. We are looking for a highly experienced Opti Coach in order to take the program to the next level. The ideal coach should have grown up sailing and racing optis and have Opti Race Coaching experience. The team travels to several events throughout The Northeast as well as attending and hosting several local events. US Sailing Level 2 will be required prior to season in order to coach in Junior Olympic events. Salary is negotiable for the right individual and housing with members is available.
