GREAT OAKS REGATTA

Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, LA
November 16-17, 2002

Sixty-one sailors from ten states competed for the Great Oaks Trophy. Strong 25-30 mph NW winds and 4-5' seas had the teams retreating to the French Quarter for a day of sightseeing on Saturday. Sunday brought 10-15 mph WNW breeze and calmer seas. Fourteen races were sailed in Club420’s provided by SYC, Pontchartrain Yacht Club, and Tulane University Sailing Team.

Metairie Park Country Day School of Metairie, LA sailors Philip Schmalz and Jackson Benvenutti finished first with 45 points. Maryknoll School of Honolulu, HI sailors Denise Kobashikawa and Martin Sterling placed second with 60 points. Brother and sister team of William and Lauren Pochereva of Punahou High School also in Honolulu finished a close third with 62 points. Seniors Philip Schmalz and William Pochereva were both pleased to place in the medals since this event was their last Great Oaks. Philip has sailed in the regatta three times and this was William’s second trip to New Orleans for the fall event.

The Great Oaks Regatta is a national invitational regatta started in 1999 by the Interscholastic Sailing Association for new high school sailing teams three years or younger. ISSA President Larry White attended the regatta this year after missing last year’s due to the events of 9/11/01. Mr. White has been to every National High School Regatta during his 15-year presidency. All of the sailors, coaches, parents, and organizers of high school sailing would like to thank Larry and his wife for their continued support.
