2003
Despite a ninety
percent chance of rain on Saturday and a sixty percent chance of rain
on Sunday, the Houston Yacht Club in conjunction with the La Porte HS
Sailing Team hosted the 2003 ISSA National High School Single-handed
Championships for the Cressy Trophy.
The
regatta was sailed in sixteen new Full Rig Lasers and Radial Rig
Lasers supplied by Vanguard Sailboats. The thirty-two sailors from
around the nation qualified through their districts to earn the right
to sail in this national competition. Racing began on Saturday with
10-15 knots of breeze, cloudy skies, and drizzle. Fortunately the
breeze held up and the rain diminished giving the race committee an
opportunity to complete 10 races in each fleet on Saturday. Sunday
began with light and shifty conditions for the first four races of the
day, then shifted to the northwest at 8-12 knots for the final two
races. The race committee set the short thirty minute course
adjacent to the north jetty area of the Houston Yacht which
gave spectators and coaches an opportunity to have close viewing of
the racing. A
special thanks goes to PRO John Kolius and Terry Flynn for working
hard to complete sixteen races in each fleet. Their strong race
committee crew included members of the La Porte HS Sailing Team:
Roberta Steele, Chris Flynn, Mallory Fontenot, and Megan Mulhern along
with FULL RIG-In Order-Preliminary Results
