WINNING TEAM : Country Day Metairie, LA
On November 8th and 9th the 2003 Great Oaks National High
School
Doublehanded Invitational Regatta was hosted by Southern Yacht
Club . A
total of 19 races were sailed on Lake Pontchartrain in New
Orleans, LA.
The weather was excellent with exception of the fading breeze as
the day
went on. Both days we had 70 degree temperatures with
12 knots of wind in
the morning and by 3:00pm the racing had ceased with the wind.
The winner of the event was Metairie Park Country Day High
School's Jackson
Benvenutti and Elizabeth Parker from Metairie, LA with 62 pts..
They
sailed a very consistent regatta winning many races and finishing
all but 3
races in the top 5 position. Second place went to The
Antilles School's
Taylor Canfield and Nathan Rosenberg from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
After
the first three races their score was 1, 1, 1, only to learn that
due to
some aggressive starting tactics their score was actually 1, OCS,
OCS.
Canefield / Rosenberg rallied the rest of the weekend finishing in
the top
group and working their overall position back to 2nd place with
104 pts.
Third place was hotly contested for by Sacred Hearts Academy's
Tina Pryne
and Shanna Nakamura from Honolulu, HI and Brother Martin High 's
Patrick
Ryan and Hunter Leblanc from New Orleans, LA. The last race
decided 3rd
place in this regatta and Sacred Hearts Academy's 2nd place finish
in the
last race tied the score with 109 pts and won the tie breaker
having beat
Brother Martin in that race.
The competitors, parents, chaperones, coaches and volunteers
all enjoyed a
taste of Southern Hospitality at Mr. and Mrs. Howard Schmalz'
house in the
beautiful Garden District of New Orleans on Saturday evening with
a social
/ dinner. The food, prepared by Southern Yacht Club, was
enjoyed by all.
The Great Oaks Regatta was a great success due to many factors.
The
biggest of which, were the competitors. We had 19
competitors from five
ISSA Districts and 8 States. Competitors travelled from as
far away as
Honolulu, HI, Orcas, WA, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Lake
Minnetonka, MN.
Also making this regatta great was the University of New Orleans
and Tulane
University sailing teams for the use of their 420 fleets and the
many
Southern Yacht Club members who volunteered their time and effort
including
past Commodore Phil James and Natalie James for allowing us to use
their
boat Grand Finale as the Race Committee boat.
It was a pleasure serving as Regatta Chair for this event and
look forward
to hosting the Great Oaks Regatta again next year.
Sincerely,
Cal Herman
Regatta Chairman, Great Oaks Regatta
Southern Yacht Club
