Milton wins the2002 Baker

After an absence of several years from the win column in national schools

team racing, New England has come back with Milton Academy(MA)'s close

victory over Tabor Academy(MA) in the final rounds of the championship

series. Southeast's Jesuit High School(LA) was third, Pacific's Newport

Harbor High School(CA) was fourth in the double round-robin among the top

four to decide the championship.

  Over the Memorial Day weekend host MidWest ISA chose the Grosse Pointe

Yacht Club and its waters on Lake St. Clair(MI) as the site for this

regatta, and , using the Reverse-N course, PRO Ted Everingham provided a

flawless 66-race first round- robin among the 12 teams selected

nationwide from the seven ISSA districts. Completed on a windy and rainy

Saturday, the preliminary series provided the seedings for  Sunday's

moderate air and flat water racing in the Championship, Blue and Red

Rounds. All was done by 4:00pm, awards made and teams on their way home.

A certain and positive influence in this was a combination of the

exceptional talents of the competitors and the on-the-water judges led by

Chief Judge Don Becker, using the RRS Appendix D Observer System and

on-the-water hearings as needed. Only three hearings were held ashore, of

those, two were for redress.

  Defending Coronado High School was denied the skills of lead skipper

Brian Haines due to an unexpected injury Friday evening just before the

series start.

  Awards were made by the Commodore of Grosse Pointe YC and the President

of ISSA. The top teams are invited to race in the UK in the British

Schools Dinghy Racing Association Team and Fleet Racing Championships in

early July.
