The 1998 Baker Trophy - The National High School Team Racing Championships.

Newport Harbor HS won every race, 11-0 in the first round, and 2-0 in both final matches. In the flat water and reliable westerly, teams enjoyed perfect team racing conditions, and at its peak the Race Committee was knocking off seven races per hour, triangle-windwards. St. Petersburg HS(FL) was 8-0 for second in round 1, a three-way tie for third among Milton(MA), Tabor(MA) and St. George's(RI) was resolved by who won each meeting, with St.George's third, Milton fourth and Tabor out of the final round in fifth.

PCISA's Tim Hogan called on Bill Maxam, who organized and executed the ISSA Mallory and Cressy in Coronado a couple of years ago to repeat his magic with another perfect series. The jury, led by Don Becker, used the observer system(App.D- RRS) and hearings on the water to speed up racing, leaving virtually no hearings ashore. Pat Healy, Josh Adams, Clay Mock and Jamie Malm worked with Don in this flawless series. This was probably the best of the Baker series to date, 77 races without a hitch.

A tent made the austere beach seem like home. The building planned as regatta headquarters was demolished unexpectedly shortly before the regatta began.

In the final round, NHHS was followed by St. George's, Milton and St. Petersburg. Top two teams who can go will compete in the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association(BSDRA)International Team Racing Championship where crews must "swap helms" each race, and in the BSDRA Dinghy Championship at Itchenor in International 420s. Top two also will apply for the US SAILING Hinman Trophy competition for the National Team Racing Championship.
