SUMMER SAILING/BOATING INSTRUCTORS WANTED
The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, New York is seeking to find two or three sailing and boating instructors for the summer to run the kids’ sailing/boating program there. The Club has a boat house on a small lake (a 5 mile circumference/reservoir clean water), with several 420s and Optis on hand, as well as an assortment of canoes and kayaks and an electric boat. The instructors should be proficient enough at sailing and boating that they can teach basic skills to kids who will range in age from about 9 years old to 15 years old, and whose skill levels will range from rank beginner to modest intermediate. Sailing is the favored form of boating, but on days when there is inadequate wind, other types of boating will be pursued.
In prior years, the program has consisted of a two-session day, four days per week (from Monday through Thursday). The morning session is for the more junior sailors, and usually runs from 9:00 to 11:00. The afternoon session is for the older sailors, and usually runs from 12:30 to 3:00. In the past, instructors have also taken turns being available for some of each Saturday and/or Sunday, to supervise races and to give private instruction.
The Tuxedo Club is extremely eager to to find instructors for the summer, and is willing to be flexible to accomodate instructors’ needs and schedules. Although it would be ideal if instructors could be available from mid-June through mid-August, the crtical time when they are most needed is the month of July. And while weekend availability is desired, at least on a rotating basis, it is not absolutely essential.
The Club does not at this time have sleeping accomodations to offer instructors. However, the bus ride to and from Port Authority and Tuxedo Park is about one hour, and there are trains to and from Tuxedo Park and NYC.
Qualifications required for the job are basic. The instructors need to be at least 16 years old, with sailing and boating experience, who love kids and enjoy working with them.
